The History Of Aintree Racecourse

There are so many racecourses in the UK with rich histories and ones that are famous for one reason or another. One of the most popular and well-known racecourse is the Aintree Racecourse in Aintree, Merseyside, England. Let`s talk about what make this racecourse not just special and unique, but also some of its interesting history.

The Grand National at Aintree Racecourse

The course was founded back in 1829 and is best known for the annual world-famous Grand National Steeplechase. The first steeplechase event was held in 1939, but there had been countless flat races held there in the decade prior.

The Grand National at Aintree

What is it that makes this steeplechase more interesting and more famous than all the rest? This is primarily because it`s known as one of the hardest steeplechases in the world, with 16 fences. The Grand National is over four miles long and usually has 40 other horses competing. This alone makes it incredibly demanding because you`re not just competing to get over those fences as fast as possible, but jockeys and horses are also competing purely for space on the track.

Although this race is insanely difficult, the legendary race horse Red Rum is known for winning three times in the 1970s and coming second twice, so it`s not impossible to excel at it!

Of course the Grand National isn`t the only race that`s held at the Aintree Racecourse. However, surprisingly, it`s not even just used for horse racing, which is unusual for racecourses, which are usually used year round for various kinds of horse racing.

Motor Racing at Aintree

The course also has been used for motor racing since the 1950s and it has held 11 non-championship Formula 1 races in its history.

Aintree is also used for motor racing

In addition to motor racing it`s also been used as a music venue, with famous musicians such as Michael Jackson and Pink performing there. This is awesome because it`s so unusual for a racecourse to be used for so many historically amazing things.

Aintree Golf Course

Samson - Disney Horse

Finally, the racecourse also has been used for golf, since it contains a 9-hole golf course and driving range. However, this is the one thing that the racecourse is used least for and the golf course and driving range are closed whenever there`s a horse or motor race going on.

This awesome racecourse hasn`t been around as long as some others, but it`s certainly got a fascinating and multi-cultural history that many racecourses don`t share. Not many can boast they`ve had the queen visit as well as Michael Jackson and some racecar winners as well. You can now access the racecourse via the Aintree railway station directly outside the boundaries.
